The Youngest Panula Student
Arijus Šereckis, just 13 years old, has been engaged to conduct the Odense Symphony Orchestra in Denmark for next season — making him one of the youngest conductors ever to lead a professional symphony orchestra.
Šereckis is currently the youngest student of Jorma Panula, the legendary Finnish conducting pedagogue whose former students include Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Osmo Vänskä.
Musical Family
Music runs in the family. His father plays trumpet in the Kuopio City Orchestra in Finland, while his mother, Vaida Žygaitė-Šerecke, teaches classical saxophone.
The Debate
The engagement has generated lively discussion in the classical music world. Some question whether a 13-year-old possesses the musical knowledge and life experience necessary for professional conducting — a discipline that traditionally values maturity and deep repertoire knowledge.
Others point out that prodigious conducting talent, while rarer than instrumental prodigies, does exist — and that early professional experience, when properly supported, can be invaluable for development.
Context
The Odense Symphony Orchestra, based in Denmark's third-largest city, has a history of adventurous programming. Their willingness to engage a teenage conductor aligns with a broader trend of orchestras seeking to connect with younger audiences and challenge conventions about who belongs on the podium.
