Six Deadlines Before Christmas, Checked at Source.

A competition has two dates that matter, and they can be months apart. There is the date the competition happens, which is the one on the poster, in the press release and at the top of the website. And there is the date applications close, which is the one that decides whether you are in it, and which can sit far down a regulations page or inside a PDF.

A calendar that takes the headline date from an organiser's page prints the first. Musicians need the second.

So we went and checked. Below are six application deadlines, set by five organisers, that fall between 5 October and 14 December 2026, with the fees, age limits and prizes where the organisers print them, each read off the organisers' own pages on 7 September 2026 and re-checked on 25 September 2026, apart from the Opera Crown age limits, fee rule and prizes (from the organiser's terms), the Leeds birth-date rule and the Mirjam Helin age rule and fee, which Cadenza first read on 25 September 2026. Five of the deadlines are for competitions; the sixth is for the Verbier Festival Orchestra, which fills its places by live or video audition.

The six that close before Christmas

One more opens in October 2026 and closes before Christmas. The Queen Elisabeth Competition's 2027 session is for voice and runs from 9 May to 2 June 2027 in Brussels. Its application page, as Cadenza re-read it on 25 September 2026, describes the competition as one for classically trained musicians "aged between 18 and 30 years", and says applications "will open in October 2026" and close at 12:00 noon GMT on Wednesday 25 November 2026, so that date goes in the diary.

A note on the Cleveland entry, because it is instructive. The competition's own page listed its final round as "August 4 – 8, 2024" when Cadenza re-checked it on 25 September 2026. Every other round date on the page that day, apart from the 4 December 2026 pre-screening deadline, was in 2027. Organisers make these mistakes too, which is a reason for checking a date against more than one line of a single web page.

Why this happens

It is worth understanding the mechanism, because it can produce wrong dates on any calendar that scrapes rather than reads.

Leeds shows how. Its 2027 competition page, as Cadenza read it on 25 September 2026, leads with the competition's dates, 8 to 18 September 2027. The closing date, 31 October 2026, comes further down, under "Dates and Locations", and the fees are not on that page but on the entry portal. The competition is the event, the thing worth promoting. On Cadenza's reasoning, any system that takes the most prominent date from a page like that takes the competition rather than the deadline, and does so silently, because a plausible future date does not look like an error.

The tell is the gap. When a listed deadline falls in the same week as the competition, or after it, the field is probably holding the wrong date. That is a rule any musician can apply to any calendar.

The second lesson is about fees, which organisers do not always publish in a form you can compare. Cleveland is the model: $150 by 4 November, $200 after it, printed on the same page as the deadline, a $50 penalty for a month's hesitation. Verbier states €75. Leeds is the trap. Its regulations describe three tiers, a reduced early rate, a standard rate and "a higher non-refundable fee" for late applications, and, when Cadenza read them on 25 September 2026, printed no amounts at all. The amounts do exist, but not on the leedspiano.com pages Cadenza read (the competition page, the regulations, the application guidance and the FAQs): on that date they sat on the Acceptd portal behind the Apply button, at £150 to 30 September, £200 to 31 October and £250 to 7 November. An applicant who reads the regulations and stops there never sees the £100 spread. A student sending off six applications is committing real money, and on an aggregated calendar it may not be visible at all.

If you are applying

• By 5 October: Opera Crown video applications, for the competition in Tbilisi from 8 to 13 November 2026.
• By 30 September: Leeds at the £150 early rate. The same application costs £200 from 1 October and £250 in the late window.
• By 31 October: Leeds at £200, at 23:59 GMT. Late applications are taken until 7 November at £250, and nothing after that. The first round is played in seven cities from 30 March to 6 April 2027, so the audition may be closer to home than the final.
• By 4 November: Cleveland at $150. After that the same application costs $200.
• 2 to 30 November: Mirjam Helin, closing at 4 p.m. Finnish time, for a competition the organisers say will be their first in Turku, in June 2027.
• By 4 December, 11:59 p.m. EST: Cleveland's standard deadline, at $200.
• By 14 December, 23:59 EST: Verbier Festival Orchestra live auditions; 11 January 2027 for video.
• October to 25 November: the Queen Elisabeth opens its voice applications in October 2026 and closes them at 12:00 noon GMT on 25 November 2026.

Cadenza lists orchestra positions, teaching posts and staff openings, free to musicians, on its jobs board.

The question is for the organisers, and the Leeds page shows the problem: if the date applications close decides who takes part, why does it sit below the date of the competition rather than above it?

Correction, 25 September 2026: This article said the Queen Elisabeth Competition had not published a closing date for its 2027 voice applications. When Cadenza re-read its application page on 25 September 2026, the page said applications close at 12:00 noon GMT on Wednesday 25 November 2026, and the article now gives that date. It also described the Opera Crown live auditions in Washington, Prague and Budapest as if they were still to come; all three were scheduled for dates in September 2026 that have passed. Cleveland's first round, given as March or April 2027, is now listed by the competition as March 2027. A section comparing these dates with Cadenza's own competition listings has been removed, and the Mirjam Helin row now gives its age rule and fee. The Opera Crown row now gives the organiser's age limits (women 21 to 30, men 22 to 32) and says it charges no registration fee, and the Leeds row now gives its birth-date rule. The Opera Crown prizes are now taken from the organiser's terms, which list a fourth prize, an engagement for a performance at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre with a $2,000 fee, beside the $10,000, $7,000 and $5,000 prizes; the article previously gave OperaWire's reported total of $22,000 for those three.
