Sinfonia Lahti has named Nil Venditti its next chief conductor, from the 2027-28 season. She is thirty-one, she was a cellist first, and it is her first chief conductorship.
Her own reaction, in the orchestra's announcement, is nine words long: "I'm excited about the music, the laughter and the long road ahead."
The announcement contains something more useful than most of its kind, and it is the reason this is worth more than a paragraph.
The number most appointments do not give you

Sinfonia Lahti has published the shape of the contract: three years, with an option for two further years, and a minimum of six performing weeks a year.
That last clause is the one that matters and the one almost nobody prints. A chief conductorship is a title. What makes it a job is how many weeks the person is actually in the building, and orchestras very rarely say.
Multiply it out and the contract has a floor.
| Guaranteed term | 3 years |
| Minimum weeks a year | 6 |
| Floor over the guaranteed term | 18 performing weeks |
| If the option is taken up | 5 years, floor of 30 weeks |
Eighteen weeks over three years is the least she can do and still have met the contract. Thirty over five if it runs its full course. Those are floors, not forecasts, and the option may never be exercised, which is why this piece gives both figures rather than the flattering one.
It is a modest commitment by the standards of a nineteenth-century Kapellmeister and an entirely normal one now, when a chief conductor of a mid-sized European orchestra typically holds two or three posts at once. Venditti is currently principal guest conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia. The value of Lahti publishing the six-week floor is that a reader can see the shape of the commitment instead of guessing at it.
A correction, before it spreads
Several accounts of this appointment have reached for the obvious line, that Venditti is the orchestra's first female chief conductor.
She is not, and Sinfonia Lahti's own history says so. Its chief conductors run Osmo Vänskä, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Okko Kamu, Dima Slobodeniouk and, most recently, Dalia Stasevska, whose four-year term ended in spring 2025.
Dalia Stasevska was Sinfonia Lahti's first female chief conductor. Venditti will be its second. That is still worth saying, and it is a better fact than the wrong one, because an orchestra appointing a second woman to the post is evidence of something more durable than an orchestra appointing a first.
Two in six
The lineage the orchestra publishes is worth counting, because the count is the more interesting fact.
| # | Chief conductor |
|---|---|
| 1 | Osmo Vänskä |
| 2 | Jukka-Pekka Saraste |
| 3 | Okko Kamu |
| 4 | Dima Slobodeniouk |
| 5 | Dalia Stasevska |
| 6 | Nil Venditti, from 2027-28 |
Six names in the orchestra's own list, and two of them women. That is a third of a published lineage, arrived at by a Finnish orchestra of moderate size without any of it being announced as a policy.
It is also worth noting what the list does not contain, which is a long tail. These are the chief conductors the orchestra chooses to name, so the sequence should be read as the line it presents rather than as a complete institutional history stretching back to the orchestra's founding.
The more useful comparison is with the two appointments either side of it. Stasevska served four years. Venditti has three guaranteed with two optional. An orchestra that has now given consecutive chief conductorships to women aged in their thirties and early forties is running a different recruitment strategy from one that waits for a name.
The gap she is filling
Stasevska's contract ran to 31 July 2025. Venditti starts with the 2027-28 season. Between those two points the orchestra has had no titled chief conductor.
Hannu Lintu has held the role of artistic partner since autumn 2025, which is a different title carrying different obligations, and he separately holds the artistic directorship of the orchestra's International Sibelius Festival. Venditti's appointment does not include that festival role.
Cadenza is not going to print an exact length for the vacancy. Finnish seasons do not begin on a fixed calendar date and the orchestra has not published when Venditti's tenure formally starts beyond "the 2027-28 season," so any precise figure would be invented. What can be said is that the gap runs to roughly two years, and that the orchestra chose to bridge it with a named artistic partner rather than leave the post simply empty.
Readers who followed Cadenza's season-openings ledger will recognise Lintu from the other end of it. He opened the Singapore Symphony's season on 17 July as its new music director, with Mahler's Fifth.
Who she is
Venditti was born in Perugia in 1994, to an Italian father and a Turkish mother. She trained as a cellist before she conducted, which is a common enough route and tends to show in how a conductor handles string sound.
The critical record on her is real but mixed, which is what a critical record looks like for a conductor of thirty-one, and Cadenza is going to report it as it is rather than select from it.
Bernard Hughes, reviewing her 2024 Proms debut with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for The Arts Desk, gave four stars and a verdict that was positive overall while not being persuaded by everything: he was unconvinced by her account of the Grace Williams overture that opened the concert. Two years later, in August 2026, Bachtrack gave her Proms performance of Rossini's Stabat Mater with the BBC Symphony Orchestra five stars, though that review sits behind a paywall and Cadenza could read only its public standfirst, so it is reported here as a rating rather than quoted.
What the orchestra said
The orchestra's board chairman, Vesa Lehtinen, and its general manager, Maija Kylkilahti, both spoke in the announcement. Lehtinen's emphasis was not on Venditti's technique but on how she works with players: the board valued her open, collaborative way with the orchestra. Kylkilahti called her one of the most interesting and sought-after conductors of the current era, citing her energy and musicality.
Cadenza is paraphrasing both rather than quoting them, because the full wording sits in the orchestra's own announcement and this newsroom would rather send a reader there than lift a sentence imprecisely.
A year ago it was a guest week
Chief conductorships are almost never won from a standing start. They are won by guest conducting, which is to say by a series of weeks in which an orchestra decides whether it wants to see somebody again.
Cadenza carries conducting posts, auditions and schemes with open deadlines, free to musicians, on its jobs board and its competitions board.
If you want to hear the orchestra before 2027. Sinfonia Lahti streams its own concerts free through SL ClassicLive, a service the orchestra says it began in 2007, describing itself as the first orchestra in the world to broadcast its concerts online as a matter of routine. That is available now, from anywhere, and costs nothing. The orchestra publishes its 2027-28 season, which will carry Venditti's first dates as chief, through its own site and newsletter.
The question is one every orchestra announcement invites and almost none answers. Lahti published the floor under its new chief conductor's weeks. How many other orchestras appointing a chief this season will say how many weeks they have actually bought?
Sources: Sinfonia Lahti's own announcement of the appointment, which carries Venditti's quoted words, the three-year term with an option for two further years, the minimum of six performing weeks a year, the 2027-28 start and the remarks by Vesa Lehtinen and Maija Kylkilahti that are paraphrased above; and the orchestra's own Orchestra page, which lists its chief conductors as Osmo Vänskä, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Okko Kamu, Dima Slobodeniouk and Dalia Stasevska, whose four-year term ended in spring 2025, and which is the basis for the correction that Venditti will be the orchestra's second female chief conductor rather than its first. Hannu Lintu's artistic partner role and his separate artistic directorship of the International Sibelius Festival are from the same source. Bernard Hughes's four-star review is in The Arts Desk and was read in full; the five-star Bachtrack rating of the August 2026 Proms Stabat Mater is reported as a rating because the review itself is paywalled.
The figures of 18 and 30 performing weeks are Cadenza's arithmetic from the published contract terms. No exact length is given for the vacancy between Stasevska and Venditti because neither the end of one tenure nor the start of the other is fixed to a published calendar date.
