Four Conservatories Close on 1 December. The Prescreening Recording Is Due the Same Day, Which Means the Real Deadline Is October.

A conservatory application deadline looks like one date. It is not. It is the last day of a sequence that started weeks earlier and does not finish for another seven months, and almost every part of that sequence has a cut-off of its own.

Four of the five schools below close on the same day: Tuesday 1 December 2026, for entry in autumn 2027. Juilliard, Yale, Manhattan and the New England Conservatory have converged on it. That is the date a student writes in a diary, and here is what is actually due on it.

At Yale, the school's own wording is that applicants "are required to submit prescreening recordings, in addition to completing all sections of the online application, by December 1". At Manhattan, 1 December carries the application, the prescreen videos for every major that requires one, and the deadline for Duolingo English test scores. At New England Conservatory, the calendar entry is four words long: "Application and prescreening video due."

So the recording is not a later stage that follows a successful application. At three of these four schools it is the application. A student who books a hall in late November to make it has already lost.

Which means the working deadline is October. Accompanist, hall, engineer, retakes — all of it has to happen before the leaves are down.

What is due, and when

One deadline on that table is much closer than the rest. Juilliard's Artist Diploma in Opera Studies closes on Monday 2 November — eight weeks from now, and the first date in this entire piece. If you are a singer at that level, that is the deadline you are actually working to, not 1 December.

Applicants to The Tianjin Juilliard School, the school's separate campus in China, have until 15 December for Instrumental and Orchestral Studies, Instrumental and Chamber Music, Collaborative Piano and Composition.

The three months after the deadline

Manhattan, Yale, New England Conservatory and Curtis all publish what happens next, and it is worth reading together, because the shape is the same everywhere and almost nobody plans for it.

Manhattan's calendar, which the school notes is subject to change, runs: prescreen results released on 21 December; 5 January to schedule auditions for musical theatre and conducting; 15 January to schedule auditions for everyone else, and the same date for the CSS Profile, the FAFSA and all supplemental materials; 1 February for a recorded audition if you are eligible for one; in-person auditions from 26 February to 5 March; decisions on 1 April; graduate acceptances by 15 April, undergraduate by 1 May; and financial aid accepted by 15 May.

Yale's is tighter: prescreening results emailed to all applicants by 15 January at the latest, live auditions and DMA exams from 22 to 28 February, decisions on 1 April, replies due 15 April.

New England Conservatory's runs past the audition and into the money: letters of recommendation and English proficiency test scores on 15 January, the institutional aid application and the FAFSA priority date on 15 February, re-test score reports on 1 March.

Curtis stretches furthest of all — invitations to audition go out on a rolling basis through January and February, auditions are held in person in Philadelphia in February and March, admission and aid decisions land on 1 April, enrolment deposits on 15 April for graduates and 1 May for undergraduates, and official transcripts are not due until 15 July.

That 15 January line at Manhattan is the one that catches people. A student who submitted everything on 1 December and then stopped checking email has six weeks to notice that the audition itself still has to be booked.

What it costs to apply to a school that charges nothing

Curtis calls itself America's most selective music conservatory, and it charges no tuition to anybody. Cadenza wrote about that in its guide to the tuition-free conservatories, where Curtis's own admissions page is quoted: "Tuition is free for all students—always."

Applying is a different matter. Curtis's published fees are $250 for the online application and $50 for the audition, and the school tells applicants to expect "a total of $300 in fees". Materials submitted after the deadline incur a further $75 late fee, and late applications are considered case by case.

There is a waiver, open to applicants of any nationality who demonstrate significant financial need, and the form sits inside the online application itself. Here is the trap inside the trap: the fee-waiver request form is due one week before the application deadline — and Curtis has not published which day in early December that deadline falls on. Its own timeline says only "Early December". An FAQ further down the same page says "Generally… the deadline for applications is December 10", immediately followed by the warning that specific dates may change from year to year.

A student who waits for the date to be confirmed before requesting a waiver has already lost the week the waiver needs. If cost is a factor at Curtis, the request goes in now, on the assumption that the deadline is the earlier one.

None of this is unreasonable. Reading and hearing several hundred applicants costs money, and a school that forgoes tuition has to recover it somewhere. But the shape is counter-intuitive and worth stating plainly: the school with no tuition has the most expensive application on this list.

It is also not the only tuition-free school here. Yale's admissions page opens with the words "Study, tuition-free, at the only graduate school of music in the Ivy League", and states that a full-tuition award and fellowship go to every admitted student. Two of the five schools on this table charge nothing to attend.

Plan backwards, not forwards

The recording deadline is the real deadline. If the prescreen is due with the application on 1 December, the recording has to be finished in October and November. Booking a pianist in the week of Thanksgiving for a video due on the first of the month is how good players end up submitting the second-best take they had time to make.

The money deadline is earlier still. Curtis wants the waiver request a week before a deadline it has not yet fixed. If cost is a factor, that is the first date in the sequence, not the last — and it is worth asking each school, early, whether a waiver exists at all, because not all of them advertise one.

The audition is booked separately, and later. Manhattan schedules auditions on 15 January for a 1 December application, with the auditions themselves at the end of February. The application is the beginning of the process, not the end of the student's obligations.

Late is not always fatal. New England Conservatory says so in writing: "In some situations, we will accept applications after December 1." Curtis considers late applications case by case, with a $75 penalty. Neither is a plan. Both are worth knowing at 11 p.m. on 1 December.

If you are applying for autumn 2027

• Now: only Juilliard and Manhattan are open — both opened on 1 September. Yale and New England Conservatory open on 15 September and Curtis in mid-September, so three of the five are not yet taking applications.
• 2 November, at Juilliard: the Artist Diploma in Opera Studies closes. The first deadline in this list, eight weeks away.
• Before that, at Curtis: the fee-waiver request, due a week before a deadline in "early December" that has not been fixed. Send it in November.
• 1 December: Juilliard, Yale, Manhattan and New England Conservatory. Prescreening recordings due the same day at Yale, Manhattan and NEC, and English-test scores at Manhattan.
• Early December: Curtis, with prescreening materials for every instrument but oboe.
• 15 December: The Tianjin Juilliard School, for its four music programmes.
• 21 December, at Manhattan: prescreen results. 15 January, at Yale, at the latest.
• 15 January: schedule your Manhattan audition, and file the CSS Profile, the FAFSA and supplemental materials. The same date at NEC for letters of recommendation and English scores.
• 22 to 28 February at Yale, 26 February to 5 March at Manhattan, February and March at Curtis: auditions.
• 1 April: decisions, at Yale, Manhattan and Curtis alike.

Every date above is from the school's own admissions pages, read on 7 September 2026. Manhattan's calendar carries the note "all dates are subject to change", and Curtis's warns that specific dates move from year to year. That is true everywhere and worth checking before you rely on any of it, including this.

Cadenza carries competitions, academies and programmes for musicians on its jobs and programmes board, free to use, and the competition windows closing before Christmas are in this week's calendar.

Four of these five schools already publish the whole year on one page. Manhattan runs 1 September to 15 May; Curtis mid-September to 15 July; New England Conservatory 15 September to 1 March; Yale 15 September to 15 April. Only Juilliard stops at the deadline — its admissions page tells you when to apply and never says when decisions land or when a deposit is due. And only Curtis, which asks $250 to apply and a waiver request a week before its deadline, declines to say what that deadline is. Every one of these schools says it wants a wider field of applicants. The two gaps left are at the most famous school on the list and the most expensive one to apply to.
